Buy an aerobic step. An aerobic step can be used to follow choreographed routines on a DVD or in brick-and-mortar locations where step classes are held. Step exercise is a great way to work out as you use little space and can see results in a fairly short amount of time. Plus, it’s been proven that an aerobic step routine is helpful in reducing bad cholesterol and increasing the amount of HDL or good cholesterol you produce in your body.
A Highly Recommended Step Bench
Aerobic steps are available online in a variety of colors and models. For aerobic novices, the Sunny Health and Fitness Aerobic Step, which retails for about $30, is a good choice. The step is adjustable and is recommended for home training. The step also features a shock absorbent surface and provides excellent traction on any kind of flooring.
Another Good Step
If you’re a dedicated exerciser, then you might like the Hi-Step step. Although a bit pricey (around $100), it is a good step to use if you want to increase the intensity of your workouts. It adjusts to five heights so you can set the step at 4 inches, 6 inches, 8 inches, 10 inches or 12 inches, whatever height will provide the most challenge. Most aerobic steps advertised online are capable of holding an individual who weighs around 200 pounds.
A Well-rounded Workout
A step aerobic routine is often preferred as a cardio workout because it offers a lower impact way to exercise than, say, such aerobic exercises as jogging or running. Also, stepping up on an aerobic step strengthens the muscles supporting the knees as well as tones the quads, hamstrings and gluteals. Basically, a step routine takes the place of climbing but is done in the comfort of your home.
Pre-exercise Warm-up
Before you undertake any aerobic activity though, it’s important that you establish some type of aerobic warm-up routine. Therefore, take about fifteen minutes to do a set of jumping jacks, run in place or jump rope. Follow up with about 5 to 10 minutes of stretching exercise so your muscles will be more flexible when you begin your step routine.
The Basics
When using a step, make sure that you place both feet on the surface. Don’t allow your heels or toes to extend over the edges. Step down off the step, keeping one foot anchored on the step and the other foot on the floor. Step up and alternate to the other foot. Always place your weight on the foot that is on the step. Once you establish a routine, you can go on and follow some choreographed “steps,” like those shown on the step aerobic DVDs offered online.
Step up to better health. Look at the variety of aerobic steps and related DVDs online. Exercise doesn’t have to be expensive.
